How Do I Live in This World? Questions from a Novice Christian

Digg ‘n Religion

I realize Paul said “I die daily,” so it shouldn’t have surprised me that I was buried 3 times last week on the Digg website!

For those of you unfamiliar with Digg, it is one of many sites for “social bookmarking,” which is a fancy way of saying, “hey look what I found, you might like this too.” You mark sites or articles that you like, creating a public list of your own recommendations.

Since I’m new to this, I started simple, Digg.com. Every time I found articles and posts that I enjoyed reading, I marked them (or dugg them, to use the lingo they use). Other people on the site can then read my recommendation and visit the site as well, if they are interested. They can either agree with me (also digg it) or disagree with me (or bury it, as they call it).

I started to see a pattern. Upon further inspection, I realized that every recommendation that had any religious content whatsoever was being buried on this site. A sample of the comments:

“Buried due to inaccuracy. GOD DOES NOT EXIST.”

“The only real answer is to get out now before you’re 100% brain-washed.”

Wow. There are a lot of people out there who really don’t like to hear talk about Jesus. And they don’t or can’t just ignore it and skip on to the next entry, they feel a need to lash out about it. (When someone recommends a great site for football lovers, I don’t go out of my way to “bury” that site and make rude comments, I just pass it by because I’m not interested.)

But any mention of religion, God, or Jesus is more like hitting raw nerves, isn’t it? I’m learning that Christians are really not very popular out in the non-saved world.

    Catherine,

Jesus told us that if we follow him we’ll be persecuted. There are Christians dying for their faith, so we need to keep nasty comments in perspective, but it is persecution nonetheless. I’m not familiar with the website, but I thank God that you’ve staked out your portion of it for Him.

“Wow. There are a lot of people out there who really don’t like to hear talk about Jesus.”

Don’t take it personal. As Christ said,

“The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.” John 7:7

Those living a sinful lifestyle don’t want to be reminded of God.

Just started over there myself. Aren’t they supposed to hate Christ and us?

They think we’re nuts. We think they’re lost. Those type of people aren’t supposed to get along.

What offends me is when we get that from those who name Christ as Lord and Savior.

I think people like you’re referring to want very much to believe God isn’t real so that they can live life as they wish with no guilt or remorse. They think that living as God wants us to means following rules and being unhappy. Little do they know that if they would live as God says to in His word they would find so much joy that their lives would be fulfilling.

The problem is, when confronted with the Truth maybe they begin to think about their words and actions and are afraid of the consequences. So, rather than go through that they try to silence all Christians so they don’t have to think about the wrong path that they have chosen.

Of course, only Christians can see the difference because we have the Holy Spirit living within us and as Scripture says unbelievers are blind.

We just need to keep living our lives for God and pray that His love will shine through us and that people will see that life without Christ is no life at all.
